When does the School Street operate?
The School Street restrictions are in operation Monday to Friday, during school term time only.
- Please refer to the roadside signage at the entry to the zone for the specific operating times.
- The restrictions do not apply on weekends or during school holidays.
- You can check the standard Salford City Council school term dates.
- Note: Please be aware that term dates for Academies or Voluntary Aided schools may vary slightly from the council's standard calendar. If in doubt, please check the specific school’s website.
Can anyone apply for a permit?
No. Permits are available exclusively to residents living at an eligible property within the School Street boundary. You must have a vehicle registered to that address or provide evidence that you have the legal right to keep the vehicle at that property (eg, a company car or hire vehicle).
How many permits can a household apply for?
Eligible households may apply for a maximum of three permits per property.
How do I apply for a permit?
I have a hire car or temporary vehicle. What should I do?
The process depends on the length of the arrangement:
- Long-term hires: If you have a long-term lease or hire vehicle, you should apply for a standard Residential Parking Permit via the MiPermit portal. You will need to upload your hire agreement as proof of vehicle eligibility.
- Short-term / temporary vehicles: If this is only a temporary arrangement (eg, your vehicle is being serviced or repaired), you must email parking.services@salford.gov.uk with:
- Evidence of the hire (eg, rental agreement) OR evidence that you are insured to drive another temporary vehicle.
- Confirmation of how long this arrangement is needed.
- Please note: Temporary concessions will only be granted on a rolling 4-week period and only for a maximum total duration of 3 months.
Can parents apply for a permit to drop off children?
No. Parents are not eligible for permits. The aim of the scheme is to reduce motorised traffic and improve safety for our community. We expect parents to walk, wheel or scooter to school where possible. If parents are required to drop off children by car, we expect them to park in an appropriate location a five to ten minutes’ walk away and walk the last bit of the journey to school to help reduce congestion around the school gates.
Exceptions: Parents may apply for an exemption only if they hold a valid Blue Badge or if the child has essential access needs (eg, a disability preventing them from walking/wheeling the final distance). This requires supporting evidence and a validation letter from the school confirming the defined duration of the need.
Do I have to pay for a permit?
No. School Street permits and exemptions are currently issued free of charge.
I have a carer who visits me regularly. Can they enter?
Yes. If you require essential daily care visits, you may apply for a Carer’s Exemption. You will need to provide proof of the care arrangement.
Can visitors, delivery drivers, or taxi drivers enter during operating times?
- Visitors/guests: No. Guests must park outside the zone or arrive outside of operating hours.
- Deliveries: Deliveries must be scheduled outside of the restricted hours.
- Taxis: General taxis and private hire vehicles are not exempt and must not enter the zone during operating hours.
- SEN Transport: Council-contracted Home-to-School transport vehicles are exempt and permitted to enter.
I have builders or contractors working on my property.
Contractors should schedule access outside of the restricted hours where possible.
- Essential works: If emergency or essential works require access during operating hours (eg, utility works), the contractor must apply for a parking dispensation in advance. This is a chargeable service.
- Apply for a parking dispensation
How do I renew my permit?
Permits are issued with a uniform expiry date linked to the start of the scheme.
Residents must renew annually.
Reminders: Automated renewal reminders will be issued via email approximately two weeks prior to the specific expiry date of your permit.
I have changed my vehicle or am moving house.
New vehicle: You must email parking.services@salford.gov.uk with evidence of the new vehicle's purchase or hire agreement, along with your supporting documents (eg, proof of purchase or an up-to-date insurance schedule). The change to your permit registration will be actioned in your account by the Parking Team, and you will get an email confirmation from MiPermit when this is confirmed.
Moving out: If you move out of the School Street zone, you must cancel your permits via MiPermit.
How long does it take to get a permit?
Please allow up to 5 working days for applications to be processed.
Note: During busy periods (eg, Christmas and New Year), processing may take up to 10 working days. You must not enter the School Street during restricted hours until you have received confirmation that your permit or exemption is active.
Who do I contact for more information or to provide feedback on the scheme implementation?
What should I do if I receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), but I believe I should have been allowed to enter the restricted school street at the time?
You are expected to follow the nationally recognised PCN appeals processes. Further guidance on this can be found at: Options after getting a PCN
