Apply to vote by proxy

How do I appoint someone to vote on my behalf?

Asking someone to cast your vote on your behalf is called a proxy vote. If you are unable to use postal voting or get to a polling station you can nominate someone you trust (a proxy) to cast your vote for you at a particular election.

To vote in the May elections, the deadline to apply for a proxy vote is Wednesday 24 April 2024.

You can now apply for a proxy vote online if you are able to upload a picture/image of your handwritten signature.

Proxy vote applications now also need to include your national insurance number.

How do I appoint an emergency proxy to vote on my behalf?

If an emergency has arisen and you will be unable to cast your vote on polling day you can apply for an emergency proxy vote by completing and returning to us the appropriate emergency proxy vote form.

The emergency must be something that you weren’t aware of before the normal proxy vote deadline. Please use the Electoral Commission’s PDF form below which reflects your circumstances:

The deadline for an emergency proxy vote is 5pm on polling day.

This is only for a genuine emergency. For example, something that you weren't aware of before the normal proxy vote application deadline, such as having to work away last minute.

By law we need a signed application form to allow an emergency proxy vote.

If there is time, we can post a form to you. You can email us at elections@salford.gov.uk or call 0161 793 2500 with your name and full address, including postcode.
