Training and development

As part of our drive to improve the outcomes for cared for and previously cared for after children, Salford Virtual School Team provide training and development sessions across a range of subject areas linked to education for school staff, social care colleagues and carers/parents. A list of our current offer is below (sessions are either provided by VST staff, our commissioned partners or a combination of the two):

  • Effective completion of and target setting in personal education plans, including best use of the pupil premium plus grant
  • Attachment awareness/ACEs/trauma responsive approaches
  • Emotion coaching
  • Positive support meetings - whole school/staff group sessions centred around understanding and meeting the needs of individual pupils
  • Transition
  • Statutory processes for SEND, EHCPs and needs assessments
  • Understanding SEND: what it means for you and your child
  • Target setting and working with the SENDCO
  • Attendance and exclusions
  • Supporting language and literacy development in the early years
  • Supporting young people to prepare for GCSEs
  • Education processes for social work and care colleagues
  • Relevant statutory guidance and updates regarding research and best practice
  • Training for carers on any aspect of education, including how they can support the child to learn

Designated teacher network meetings

We run termly designated teacher network meetings for the senior leader responsible for cared for and previously cared for children in school. These can also be attended by the operational lead, although we strongly advise that this is in addition to the designated teacher. 

Governing bodies

We provide training for governing bodies so that they are aware of their statutory responsibilities towards our children and young people. If you have any queries please get in touch with us at the VST.

PEP Training for Designated Teachers and Social Workers via Microsoft Teams

  • Tuesday 21 November 2023, 2.30pm to 3.30pm
  • Wednesday 17 January 2024, 2.30pm to 3.30pm
  • Tuesday 12 March 2024, 2.30pm to 3.30pm (spring drop-in)
  • Thursday 25 April 2024, 2.30pm to 3.30pm
  • Wednesday 5 June 2024, 2.30pm to 3.30pm (summer drop-in)

Ideal as a refresher or for new social workers or Designated Teachers.

This training each repeated each term, so you do not need to attend every one.

You will be sent a Teams invite, please accept if you wish to attend. If you have not received an invitation, please email virtualschoolteam@salford.gov.uk and we will ensure that you receive one.

The drop-ins sessions in Spring and Summer are for you to bring any queries and will be discussion and question and answer based, rather than formal training.

Each Network Meeting will be different, so we encourage you to attend all three.

More dates will be added throughout the academic year.
