Celebrating 10 years of Age Friendly Salford

Logo - Age Friendly Salford

In October 2026, Salford will celebrate a special milestone, ten years as a recognised World Health Organisation Age Friendly City.

This achievement reflects a decade of partnership working to make Salford a great place to grow older. Together, the council and its partners have supported older people to live healthier, happier and more connected lives through community activities, advice and support available in person, by telephone and online.

At the heart of this work is Age Friendly Salford, which helps older people stay informed, safe, active and valued in their communities.

Salford has a growing older population. In 2024, more than one in four residents were aged over 60, and people are living longer than ever before. While many enjoy a positive and fulfilling later life, others can face challenges such as poor health, financial hardship and loneliness.

Funded by the council, Age Friendly Salford works in partnership with Inspiring Communities Together, Age UK Salford and Trafford, and Salford CVS. Since 2014, these organisations have worked alongside older people and local partners to create opportunities that support healthy, independent and active ageing.

The programme encourages people to age well, build social connections, and take positive steps to look after their health and wellbeing.

This page showcases some of the inspiring projects, services and initiatives that have made a real difference to the lives of older people across Salford over the past decade.

Looking ahead, public health and adult social care services will continue to work together to build on these achievements, finding new ways to improve and transform care, support and opportunities for older people, helping everyone in Salford to age well and thrive.

Age Friendly Salford aims to support people in Salford in four areas:

  • Vision 1: Older people are able to feel safe and travel to places which help keep them healthy and engaged

  • Vision 2: Older people are able to find information and services to keep healthy and engaged in activities

  • Vision 3: Older people are respected and included in neighbourhood activities to keep them healthy and engaged

  • Vision 4: Older are able to find opportunities for paid and unpaid work, as well as ensure their voice is heard to keep them healthy and engaged.
