Supporting my child’s sensory needs: An intervention course for parents/carers where there child is two to five years of age

Course description

A two-part course facilitated by Occupational Therapists that is designed for parents to gain a better understanding of sensory processing difficulties and to consider the impact this may have in relation to their child. This is a two-part course designed for parents which requires them to sign up for both Part A and Part B in the same block. Future dates will be available on an ad hoc basis dependent on demand. 

For parents/carers of child/children who live in Salford or are registered with a Salford GP, attend a Mainstream Early Years Setting, are aged 0 to five years old and are not attending specialist education (Pupil Referral Unit, Enhanced Resource Provision, Specialist School).

About the event

  • The focus of the webinars will be to increase awareness and understanding of sensory processing and the impacts on the child’s function and engagement in daily tasks and environments.

Using an interactive approach to aid understanding of your child’s individual sensory needs and exploring how to meet those needs using low level age-appropriate strategies and activities.

Parents of children with suspected sensory processing difficulties that are impacting their engagement.

Supporting sensory needs: An intervention course for parents/carers where their child attends a mainstream primary school 

Course description

A two-part course facilitated by an Occupational Therapist that is designed for parents to gain a better understanding of sensory processing difficulties and to consider the impact this may have in relation to their child. 

About the event

  • The focus of the webinars will be to increase awareness and understanding of sensory processing and the impacts on the child’s function and engagement in daily tasks and environments.

Supporting my child’s sensory need: An intervention course for parents/carers where their child attends a mainstream secondary

Course description

A two-part course facilitated by Occupational Therapists that is designed for parents to gain a better understanding of sensory processing difficulties and to consider the impact this may have in relation to their teenage child.

Please be aware: this is a two-part course designed for parents which requires them to sign up for both Part A and Part B in the same block. Future dates will be available on an ad hoc basis dependent on demand.

There are two sessions of two hours each session. This is a virtual online course via Microsoft Teams.

About the event

  • This course is designed for parents/carers of secondary school age children with suspected sensory needs.
  • The focus of the webinar will be to increase awareness and understanding of the external impacts on the teenager and consider ways to support these needs through age-appropriate strategies, taking into consideration the educational setting.
  • Using an interactive approach to aid understanding of your teenager’s individual sensory needs and exploring how to meet those needs using low level age-appropriate strategies and activities.

Who should attend

Parent/carer whose child is of secondary school age and has suspected sensory needs.

Understanding how neurodivergent children and young people learn most effectively  

Course description

To help parents and carers understand why their Children and Young People (CYP) might be struggling with learning and to help them to understand how to support their CYP, at home. This course is delivered by the Educational Psychology team.

About the event

90-minute course with questions and answers. Overview of some of the factors that neurodiverse CYP may experience with opportunities to consider the ways in which to support them.

Supporting my child’s social communication, interactions and language skills

Course description

The Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) will discuss social communication skills and some differences that children might experience in this area. The SLT will also share strategies to support your child’s communication skills at home.

  • This is an online (virtual) course via Microsoft Teams consisting of 30 minutes presentation followed by 60 minutes of questions and answers.

Promoting good sleep: An intervention course to support parents / carers to promote good sleep where their child may have a neurodevelopmental need or learning disability 

Course description

This session aims to help parents to understand children’s sleep patterns and how to promote good sleep. Specific areas covered include:

  • Why sleep is important
  • Sleep contusive environments
  • Completing sleep diaries
  • An exploration of the reasons children struggle to sleep
  • Sensory factors affecting sleep.
  • Sleep hygiene measures

There will be an opportunity for questions at the end of the session.

About the event

This course is an online training course via Microsoft teams. The course last for 60 minutes.

Who should attend

This course is aimed at parent/carers with children aged three years or more.

Understanding the Diagnostic Assessment Pathway: A workshop for parents / carers explaining the diagnostic assessment process 

Course description 

The ‘Understanding the Assessment Pathway’ workshop will give parents / carers an overview of the assessment. It will include information on which professionals they may see, what the assessment process involves and what evidence the professionals need to gather as part of the assessment process.

The workshop will be delivered by the clinicians who complete the diagnostic assessments from CAMHS and Community Paediatrics.

There will be opportunities to ask questions during the session. 

About the workshop 

A workshop will take place every month. Parents / carers can join a workshop that suits them. The workshop will be 60 minutes and it will be held on Microsoft Teams. 

Who should attend

The workshop is for parents / carers when their child has been accepted for a neurodevelopmental assessment.
