The road safety team offer the following road safety sessions free of charge to all schools within Salford:
Key Stage 1
Nursery/reception talks – Teddy Takes a Tumble/Walk sessions encourage children to wear seatbelts and hold hands when they are walking to school and so on. The session is interactive and encourages children to discuss their journey to school and look at how they can travel safely.
Assemblies – These can be bespoke to certain issues or key topics depending on the time of year, location of school, or concerns that the school may have regarding specific road safety messages relevant to their pupils.
Key Stage 2
Bikeability Learn to ride – A practical training session designed to help riders improve their ability and confidence in riding a bike.
Bikeability Level 1/2 – An on road practical training programme delivered over the space of 8 hours aimed at improving a riders confidence, ability and knowledge of riding on the road.
Pedestrian training – Salford City Council offer free practical training at the roadside for key stage 2 pupils. Children in key stage 2 are vulnerable are at risk when they are travelling by foot on a daily basis. Many pupil’s start to make independent journeys and play outside increasing the risk. A lot of children are driven to and from school and because of this they are not developing pedestrian safety vital skills. The Pedestrian training course helps develop new skills to enable pupils to cross the road safely. Children are encouraged to look for dangers whilst out walking with instructors and identify safer places to cross the road.

The Road Safety Quiz - This is designed to make pupils aware of their surroundings and road furniture and identify how their actions and decisions impact on their safety. Pupils are encouraged to work in small groups and use a copy of ‘Tales of the Road’ (a highway code for young road users) to solve the answers to the quiz. At the end of the quiz pupils can discuss the answers they have given in a larger group to help them understand how they can stay safe when travelling each day.
Way 2 Go – Way 2 Go magazine cover the vital topic of sustainable travel and helps year 6 pupils develop route planning skills to enable them to travel to school safely when they move to high school. The activity book is full of activities and ideas and provides a flexible approach for classroom use.
Another way to school – Is a comic book that encourages children to walk to school. It covers five reasons to walk to school. Walk fit, walk for clean air, walk because it is free, walk for sweet dreams and walk to the top of the class.
