Preparing for winter

There are practical things you can do to prepare for winter weather.

Some other helpful tips:

  • Take extra care in ice and snow- wear boots or shoes with good grip
  • Consider fitting grab rails at your front and back door
  • Check your boiler is working
  • Stock up your food cupboards or freezer in case you can’t get out for a couple of days
  • Keep simple cold, flu and sore throat remedies in the house
  • Speak to your friends, family, or carer they may need some help
  • Order prescriptions in plenty of time

Get vaccinated

As we age our immune system is less efficient at protecting us. There are several vaccinations available for older adults. These are free on the NHS. Talk to you GP practice for further information.

Stay warm

Keeping warm over the winter months can help prevent cold, flu and serious health problems.

Keep your home warm

Heat you home to at least 18C during the day and night will help to keep you well during the colder months. However, the cost of heating your home can be expensive there are a number of ways to make you home warmer for more information see our make your home more energy efficient page.

Paying bills

If you’re struggling to pay your bills, please ask for help as soon as possible. Speak to Salford Foundation or your energy provider and ask how they can help you.

Pension Credits

Have you checked if you're entitled to pension credits? You could be missing out on extra weekly income and support to help you through the winter. For benefit advice contact the Welfare Rights team.

Hot meals and drinks
