For children, nutrition supports their development, learning, focus and concentrate, interactions with others and everyday physical activities.
For some neurodivergent children eating can present some difficulties. This may be linked to their previous experiences around food or their sensory needs.
Whilst advice for neurotypical children can be helpful at times, we know that this advice may not always work for neurodivergent children. Every child is different. Their own needs should be carefully considered.
There are however some key principles to consider when thinking about your child’s eating. For example, reflecting on the mealtime routines at home, what the environment is like or the food groups your child is eating from can all be helpful in guiding your child’s eating.
The information on this website aims to support you in helping your child. We know that using tips and strategies consistently is far more effective in helping your child’s eating behaviours. We also know that intervening early often leads to much better outcomes longer term.
It is important to remember that every child is different. Your understanding of your child should guide you in what will work best for them.
