About the area
The Quays, Ordsall, Pendleton and Charlestown area forms the southern most part of Salford's inner city bounded by the Manchester Ship Canal on two sides. It incorporates Salford Quays and contains good quality housing and leisure developments.
The rest of the Ordsall area is mainly social housing, much of which has seen major redevelopment over the last ten years. The main Ordsall estate currently sees the construction of new family housing, this being achieved through a partnership between the city council and LPC Living, a local development company.
The Seedley and Langworthy Regeneration Programme, located in Pendleton ward, is designated as one of Salford's areas of major change and is a key priority for investment in the city. The SRB5 programme which ran from 1999 to 2006, covered an area which comprises approximately 3,200 households.
Salford Quays is an important landmark site in the area are includes The Lowry, an international arts centre and MediaCityUK. Other facilities in Ordsall, Pendleton and Charlestown include two recreation centres, the watersports centre and two municipal parks.
There are important heritage sites in the area. Ordsall Hall is a grade I listed Tudor building and is currently a museum. Salford Lads Club was 100 years old in 2003 and has recently applied for listed status.
Langworthy Cornerstone situated on Langworthy Road is a purpose built, health and well-being and community resource centre. In Ordsall the Neighbourhood Building is a multi-purpose community building.
There are two major youth initiatives happening in the area - SAYO in Ordsall and SPARKY in Pendleton. These programmes offer young people a wide range of sports and art activities.
In Pendleton, traditional terrace houses are being converted into modern accommodation for local residents and for those wishing to move into the area.
The area has seen a huge increase in buildings and population recently due to the construction of large numbers of apartments and flats. Ordsall, Pendleton and Charlestown and The Quays is now considered an attractive area in which to live and invest.
The Charlestown area is home to both The Beacon Centre on London Street, a purpose-built youth centre hosting a number of activities for young people and Walk The Plant, one of the UK’s foremost outdoor arts companies. There's also the Bolton Road Playing Fields with an outdoor gym, St Sebastian's Community Centre on Douglas Green and notable local landmark, St George's Spire.
