Salford City Council Housing Services and safeguarding

Designated Safeguarding Officers (DSO’s)

Within the Council’s Housing Services teams there are Designated Safeguarding Officers (DSO’s) who’s key responsibility is to provide advice and support to housing colleagues within their service around safeguarding concerns to ensure that the appropriate action is taken if, or when required, and to provide ongoing advice and support around safeguarding concerns.

DSO role and responsibilities

  • To be a named contact to offer advice, guidance, and support and to identify next steps
  • To log internal safeguarding concerns and to support staff when making referrals if required
  • To monitor the progress and response of referrals
  • To monitor the safeguarding concern
  • To offer support to escalate concerns if required
  • To offer support to escalate concerns if required
  • To challenge decisions where necessary / appropriate
  • To close the concern at an agreed point when risks have reduced or been eliminated

Housing Options Service

The Housing Options Service provide housing advice and support to prevent households becoming homeless, and they also assess households who are at risk of, or are experiencing homelessness. They provide advice and assistance on housing and housing related issues such as:

The service is free, impartial and confidential. Housing Options Service assessments will be conducted in private interview rooms and where necessary a same sex officer will be available to offer advice.

If a household is at risk of homelessness in the future, a referral to the Housing Options Service should be made using the duty to refer process for an appointment to be made for a homeless assessment under the prevention duty.

If a household is currently homeless, or likely to be homeless within 48 hours, households can present directly to the Housing Options Service for a homeless assessment under the relief duty.

Opening hours are:

8.30am to 4.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 12pm to 4.30pm on Thursday

If you are a professional and become aware of a household at risk of homelessness, you can make a referral to the Housing Options Service via the public duty to refer.

Supported Housing Services

The service provides support to people living in emergency and temporary accommodation provided by the council. The service also provide help to find permanent accommodation and support people to live independently.

Are you concerned about someone sleeping rough?

If yes, you can email the Rough Sleeper Team and the outreach workers who will go out around Salford and talk to the individual to discuss what support they can offer. Please email roughsleeperteam@salford.gov.uk with details of the adult you believe is sleeping rough.
