Salford Bolton Network Improvements (SBNI) on A666 Bolton Road between Rivington Crescent and Irlams o’ th’ Height Roundabout

Improvement works on A666 between Rivington Crescent and Irlams o’ th’ Height roundabout are due to start on 4 March 2024. The works are part of the Salford Bolton Network Improvements (SBNI) Programme, promoted by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Salford City Council.

A666 Bolton Road resurfacing

What’s happening?

We need to resurface the roads we’ve been working on to provide a smooth and safe new surface at the junction. We will also apply a new, high friction road surface and paint white lines, and other road markings.

What’s involved?

To resurface the road, we need to prepare it by removing some of the existing surface before applying the new one. This is the noisiest bit of the work. We also need to reset gutter covers and manhole lids as well as repaint white lines and other road markings. These works will be less disruptive.

What is ‘the noisiest work’?

The noisiest work includes the removal of the top road surface and any use of mechanical ‘breakers’ or ‘saw cutting’ for breaking out hard materials like concrete. We aim to finish this work by 12am on every shift, wherever possible. Please note other types of disruption through the night may include reverse beepers and flashing lights.

When will it take place?

To do this work, we need to fully close some roads on week nights, from 29 July to 12 August, on 29 August and 30 August, between 7pm and 6am. We will do this in two stages which we have explained below. The nearly three-week gap in the above dates is due to the curing times of the materials used for surfacing, before a high-friction layer can be laid.

Will bus services be affected?

Bus services will be diverted during the night shifts, between 7pm and 6am with bus stops suspended during those hours. For full details and information regarding any specific services, please visit the TfGM website.

Resident vehicle parking on Bolton Road

Please note that due to the nature of the works, we will need full access to the closed roads and parking within the specified areas on Bolton Road will not be possible. We kindly ask the affected residents to use alternative parking in work-free areas and Bolton Road side roads during the closures, between 7pm and 6am. Failure to follow these arrangements will result in delays. Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience and we would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Resident access will be maintained at all times, however there may be some hold ups while the workers move equipment out of the way and make the area safe to pass. Throughout the night works, marshals will be on site at all times to cover for emergency access within the working area.

As the A666 Bolton Road is a major route, we are doing these works at night to minimise disruption to local traffic and the wider road network. Please note access to/from the Fire Station and any other emergency services will be maintained at all times. Diversions will be clearly sign-posted.

Please note we need good weather conditions to complete the work. There might be delays if there is heavy rain or very cold temperatures. We will post any changes to the schedule on this page.

What is SBNI?

The SBNI programme involves a series of local transport network improvements across Salford and Bolton, with the aim of making travel easier for everyone including public transport users, drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. In particular, bus passengers will see shorter, more reliable journey times. The improvements delivered through the SBNI programme will also help encourage economic growth by providing better access to employment opportunities, and health, education and leisure facilities. Funding for the improvements has been supported by Central Government through the Greater Manchester Growth Deal programme. More information can be found on the TfGM website.

The A666 Bolton Road between Rivington Crescent and Irlams o’ th’ Height roundabout scheme is one of seven packages of work to be delivered in Salford, and is the last package to be completed within the SBNI programme.

Works on the scheme originally commenced in August 2020. During the works it was found that a number of underground utility services required diversion and the works were subsequently suspended. The scheme has since been retendered and the works are now scheduled to re-start on Monday 4 March 2024.

What will the scheme do?

More than 100,000 people in Bolton and Salford use buses for both work and leisure so the scheme is about improving bus reliability to get you to your destinations quickly and easily. The more reliable the buses, the more people will choose them as a way to get around which will help to ease congestion on the roads.

As part of this scheme, a dedicated peak hour bus lane towards Manchester will be introduced with peak hour parking restrictions to speed up bus journeys. The road will be fully resurfaced, bus stops improved and pedestrian crossing facilities made safer and better, including the installation of a new Toucan crossing near Westwood Drive.
The scheme is being built by AE Yates and, as part of their social value contribution to the project, they are committed to creating more employment opportunities and initiatives for local people, upskilling and educating disadvantaged and young people in the area, as well using local suppliers and subcontractors to construct the scheme, directly supporting the local economy.

When and where will the work take place?

The works started on 4 March 2024 and are due to complete in summer 2024. Working hours are 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Work that impacts traffic flow is be carried out off-peak, between 9.30am and 3.30pm.
