A666 Bolton Road is a major route between Salford and Bolton providing access to the M60 motorway, and the A6 Broad Street towards Manchester. The stretch between Elizabeth Street and Worsley Street is in a very poor condition so we need to resurface the road as part of regular highway maintenance. The works will provide a smooth and safe new surface on the carriageway, paint white lines, and other road markings. The below map shows where the work will be taking place.
Resurfacing area on A666 Bolton Road
To minimise disruption the works will start during half term, when traffic volume is reduced, and take place between 19 February and 16 March 2025.
Between Wednesday 19 and Friday 21 February we will need to install lane closures on A666 Bolton Road during our working hours of 9.30am to 3.30pm.
The rest of the works will take place over weekends with lane closures in place on the following dates:
Working hours will be 8am to 5pm on both Saturdays and Sundays.
Please note Queensway and Station Road will be closed at the junction with A666 Bolton Road from 6am Saturday 22 February to 6am on Monday 24 February. A666 Bolton Road will remain open to through traffic and diversions will be signposted.
Some of the side roads will also need to be closed on some occasions during the working hours, depending on which area we are working in.
To resurface the road, we need to prepare it by removing some of the existing surface before applying the new one. This is the noisiest bit of the work. We also need to reset gutter covers and manhole lids as well as repaint white lines and other road markings. These works will be less disruptive.
The noisiest work includes the removal of the top road surface and any use of mechanical ‘breakers’ or ‘saw cutting’ for breaking out hard materials like concrete. Please note other types of disruption may include reverse beepers, running engines and flashing lights.
The works have been carefully planned to minimise disruption to local traffic and the wider network, ensuring people can get to work and back home without delays during the busiest times. We believe it is the most effective and balanced approach that allows the works to be completed relatively quickly with some breaks for residents, but without causing a gridlock on the highway network.
Bus stops within the working area will be suspended with services 8, 21, 22 and 66 prone to delays on the dates when works are taking place.
From 6am Saturday 22 February to 6am on Monday 24 February services 21, 22 and 66 will be diverted. For full details and information regarding any specific services, please visit Transport for Greater Manchester.
Please note that due to the nature of the works, we will need full access to the closed areas and parking during the working hours on A666 Bolton Road will not be possible. We kindly ask the affected residents and visitors to use alternative parking in work-free areas and side roads.
Failure to follow these arrangements will result in delays. Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience and we would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
If you have any questions, please email SalfordRoadWorks@salford.gov.uk.
Please note we need good weather conditions to complete the work. There might be delays if there is heavy rain or very cold temperatures.
