Trinity Way and Chapel Street junction improvement scheme

The upcoming works at the junction will provide important improvements to make travel safer and more accessible for residents, commuters and visitors moving between the Crescent, Trinity, Greengate and the wider area. Construction will begin on Monday 27 July, with works focused on delivering a range of immediate safety and accessibility upgrades, including:

• Full resurfacing of the junction
• New and upgraded controlled pedestrian crossings
• Bus lane enhancements and targeted junction changes to improve safety for all users

Traffic restrictions

• Temporary signals 24/7 throughout the project
• Lane closures from Monday to Friday, between 9.30am and 3.30pm
• During peak-hours two lanes of traffic will remain open on all approaches
• Possible evening, night and weekend works under lane closures

Resurfacing

Towards to the end of the construction, we will need to close the roads overnight for resurfacing. More details on this will be provided nearer the time.

About the scheme

The scheme was originally developed as part of Greater Manchester’s Mayor’s Challenge Fund programme, with an early proposal based on a CYCLOPS-style junction design.

Following detailed traffic modelling, stakeholder feedback and further design work, the council has revised the design and adopted a two-phase delivery approach. This ensures improvements can be delivered within the funding timescales with the junction meeting modern safety standards, while still achieving the core aim of creating safer, more attractive routes for walking and cycling.

Phase 1 (27 July to mid-November 2026)

Phase 1 of the project will focus on immediate safety and accessibility improvements at the junction, including:

• New controlled pedestrian crossings on Chapel Street
• Upgraded pedestrian crossings on Trinity Way
• Layout adjustments to improve safety for all users 
• Full resurfacing of the junction with new road markings

These works respond directly to the current poor condition of the junction and the lack of safe crossing points, particularly on Chapel Street.

Phase 2

The second phase of the scheme is being developed to build on the junction improvements by focusing on the surrounding residential streets in Trinity.

This phase will introduce traffic calming, new crossing points, including an upgraded sparrow crossing on Trinity Way between Lamb Lane and Bloom Street, and public realm enhancements, helping to create a quieter, lower-traffic environment that is better suited to everyday cycling and walking.

Together, the two phases will provide a more comfortable and accessible alternative to the inner ring road for people cycling, while strengthening links between The Crescent, Trinity, Greengate and the wider city centre.

By shifting the focus towards calmer neighbourhood streets alongside key junction upgrades, the scheme will deliver a more inclusive offer for cyclists of all confidence levels.
