The proposed traffic calming measures are being introduced on road safety grounds to reduce the speed of motor vehicles. The vertical deflection associated with the cushions are designed to cause discomfort when travelled over at speed. The central traffic island is being provided to prevent vehicles travelling down the centre of the road to avoid traversing the speed cushions. These measures will promote compliance with the 20mph speed limit which ultimately is intended to promote a safer road environment for all highway users.
